Jitsi (“жици” in Bulgarian, “wires”) is a set of open source video conferencing software components. Together with the European Union they are organizing a Hackathon next week (26th of April 2021), themed “Winning over the classroom with Jitsi”.

As many parents are experiencing first hand, education systems globally are going through some radical changes. The COVID19 pandemic has triggered an incredible demand for remote learning capabilities, and video collaboration platforms — like Jitsi — offer great potential to fill that need. The software is open source and free to use, supported by an active and enthusiastic community of people around the world.

To showcase this great initiative and to amplify its value, we’re putting together a team of experts to achieve the following goal:

Enable virtual interactive classrooms with 800+ participants, to provide digital support to communities like the European Parliament

Jitsi@scale: Unleashing the network effect

In digital ecosystems, virtual platforms have an opportunity to create so-called network effects: The phenomenon where something becomes more valuable as more users use it.

The trick is creating the conditions for this to occur as a “win-win” for your business and a network of complementors — cio.com

In this project, we will be illustrating these principles in two ways:

  1. By showing how the Jitsi platform/architecture/source code can be modified and deployed to support greater numbers of concurrent users, in close collaboration with the community
  2. By documenting the steps and thought processes behind this, in a shareable/reproducible way to enable others to learn and replicate

The CNCF is kindly offering resources — shout-out to Equinix Metal, hoping you can honor my request

Very excited to be hacking with the Jitsi community next week, come join us and let’s expand the addressable audience for communities worldwide!
